Aid for Home Heating Costs
The Federal Government has announced that it will be providing financial aid to assist with expected increases in home heating costs.
Direct Financial Aid
Under this program, an Energy Cost Benefit will be provided to low-income families with children and to seniors. The amounts will be as follows:
- $250 to families entitled to receive the National Child Benefit (NCB) supplement in January 2006
- $125 to seniors entitiled to receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) in January 2006
- $250 to senior couples, where both spouses are entitled to receive the GIS in January 2006
A family with up to three children is eligible to receive the benefit if their household income is no higher than $35 595. This threshold income increases by $4 316 for every additional child.
Energy Efficiency Retrofit Incentives
The Federal Govenment also announced measures to provide financial assistance with improving the energy efficiency of homes. Under this initiative, incentives ranging from $100 - $300 will be provided to upgrade heating systems to high efficiency options. Also, additinal incentives will be available for other home retrofits that improve energy efficiency.
